Personal Statement
With a view towards propelling my work forward at this turning point in my life and professional practice, I am interested in solidifying my knowledge of a classical methodology in order to build upon my current observation-based artistic skill set.
As a working artist I exhibit primarily plein air work in addition to drawings of the natural world done from life. As an art educator I teach observation-based, perceptual, and academic/ loosely classical methodologies in landscape, portraiture, and life drawing and anatomy both animal and human.
My ultimate ambition for my artistic practice is to pivot fully towards the creation of invented figurative landscapes set in local protected ecosystems and populated with personally significant figures. To realize this artistic intention I desire to strengthen my skills in the areas of composition/ design, effective research into historical techniques of admired painters, and advanced figurative painting techniques including flesh tones, edge control, and making informed choices about how and why to paint the figure within the context of my own work. Advancing my knowledge will advance my practice, enabling me to paint to the best of my ability peopled landscapes in the tradition of Watteau, Corot, and Matthíasdóttir.
My secondary and attendant ambition is to clarify my art teaching practices. In my years of teaching I have repeatedly seen for beginners and advanced students alike the illumination provided by solid, direct observation-based art instruction. A deeper familiarity with classical language and pedagogy will help me to help students more fully and freely apply and adapt these principles.
I am ready to grow in expertise as an artist and as a teacher. The low-res, summer-intensive-only format of the Florence Academy of Art's MA program would be compatible with my ongoing professional and personal commitments. Classical and perceptual painting do not hold a firm place in the Midwestern city where I live and work. I seek to paint and instruct to the very best of my ability in the interests of not only my own art and life, but also for the culture of the place I call home.
